About the role

Reporting to the H&S and Compliance Manager with a dotted line into the General Manager you will drive safe and legal processes and practices within the Distribution Centre (DC).

You will support the General Manager to develop and manage plans ensuring H&S policies and the H&S agenda are well communicated. You will also keep up to date and accurate records and support the central team by reviewing and maintaining the business continuity plan for your DC, thus ensuring plans for emergencies are suitable and sufficient.

Main Responsibilities

  • Ensuring all health and safety policy is applied and that the health and safety agenda and overall objectives are well communicated and supported within the Distribution Centre
  • Supporting the Health and Safety Manager and the site General Manager in developing and managing the implementation of the network Health and Safety Plan.
  • Ensure that the site and outbases are compliant with the Booker Health and Safety Management system, including policies, risk assessments and safe operating procedures, in support of the policy arrangements.
  • Liaising with appropriate managers, colleagues and onsite 3rd party contractors to drive the development and delivery of the regular Safety Comms Campaigns for your Distribution Centre and network
  • Ensure that accident, incident, hazard and near miss reporting is being managed correctly at your site and preparing data as required
  • Ensuring that the site is compliant with the Health and Safety Management System, including the management of policies, risk assessments and safe operating procedures in support of the policy arrangements.  Ensuring these are reviewed and remain current.
  • Reviewing and maintaining the business continuity plan for the Distribution Centre, ensuring plans for emergencies are suitable and sufficient
  • Ensure that all risk assessment action plans are drafted and implemented to include Fire, DSEAR, Asbestos, Water in collaboration with the site Facilities team
  • Organise the site Health & Safety meeting every period to include managers and H&S representatives and provide relevant data /information as well as minutes
  • Communicate any health and safety concerns, correspondence received or visits by enforcement officers to the Health and Safety Manager for Distribution and Senior Team
  • Developing strong working relationships with local EHOs to ensure your Distribution Centre and company is properly represented at all times
  • Ensure that the weekly workplace health and safety inspection process for the DC is followed and regular site safety tours are completed to monitor general/specific compliance with health and safety policy and objectives  
  • Attend the network Health and Safety Period Review meetings and contribute with information and data for the site
  • Attend and support the central Health and Safety team meetings as required 
  • Support the management team to ensure that the DC canteen (relevant sites) is compliant with food hygiene principles and the Safe Food Better Business management system
  • Review RAMS submitted by contractors and ensure that the Permit to Work System is being maintained across the site and audited regularly to ensure compliance
  • Ensure the site uses a suitable contractor/visitor induction document and that this is being delivered effectively to contractors/visitors to the site and recorded on the site induction register
  • Support onsite functions including Maintenance and Security 

You will need

  • Previous experience working within a distribution centre or similar environment in an equivalent role
  • NEBOSH general certificate (or IOSH equivalent) in Health and Safety
  • HACCP level 3 would be advantageous
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety and Food Hygiene legislation
  • Strong Excel, PowerPoint and Word skills
  • Experience of delivering training to groups and individuals
